Cycling along the Leeds Liverpool Canal in aid of the Leeds Children’s Charity

A group of 8 people travelled to Liverpool at 4.00 am on Friday 12 August 2011 and will then be cycling back to Leeds along the Leeds Liverpool Canal over 2 days in aid of 8 different charities.

Matthew Brooke, Quality Assurance Analyst, Children’s Social Care, Leeds City Council, has chosen to sponsor the Leeds Children’s Charity and we wish him all the very best for the challenge.

Matthew modestly said that this is a very low-key event that was organised over a pub table, but the trustees of the Leeds Children’s Charity feel that this support and recognition of the work of the charity means a great deal to the children who will benefit.

Keep checking our blog for the amount raised for the charity and Matthew’s report of the challenge.

First Group to finance holidays for disadvantaged children

Great news – an award of £2,700 has been made to the Leeds Children’s Charity from First ‘s Charities and Sponsorship Committee.    This money will be used to help finance a week’s holiday/respite by the sea at Silverdale Holiday Centre, near Morecambe, for 14 disadvantaged children from Leeds.

    Holiday at Silverdale

Lisa Cartman-Kenny of First said:  “First’s donation will help this project by financing short breaks for children who would not otherwise have an opportunity to have release from often hostile environments, or to leave the City to see a different world outside of their very insular surroundings.”

The trustees of the Leeds Children’s Charity are extremely grateful to First’s Charities and Sponsorship Committee for all their help and support.

The Leeds Children’s Charity was founded in 1904 to help the disadvantaged children and families of Leeds and nearly 58,000 children have benefited since that time.  Over 400 children will enjoy time and space at Silverdale Holiday Centre during 2011 to have fun, make friends, and to be a child.

If you would like more information about the work of the Leeds Children’s Charity, or if you can help in any way, please contact info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk or telephone 0113 245 4281.

Delights in boxes from Irwin Mitchell ..

    Lots of lovely things ....

The trustees of the Leeds Children’s Charity would like to thank the staff at Irwin Mitchell LLP, Leeds, for their generosity.  Items have been collected for use at Silverdale Holiday Centre, near Morecambe, for the many disadvantaged children who will be enjoying a holiday there.

Clothes, shoes, books, toiletries, washing powder and much more have been collected and transported to the holiday centre where they will be used by children who arrive at Silverdale with only the clothes they are wearing.

We are extremely grateful for the help and support given by the staff at Irwin Mitchell LLP who have adopted the Leeds Children’s Charity as their Charity of the Year for 2011.

    Windows galore ….

The capital project to replace 126 single glazed, metal framed windows is now well underway.  With the aid of grants, local support, and the sponsorship of Bridge Aluminium Systems Limited, the trustees have now replaced over half of the windows at Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre at a cost of nearly £50k.

    Out with the old ..

    ... in with the new

This work has been undertaken to reduce energy costs and to make the building more comfortable and energy efficient for the 400 disadvantaged children who enjoy a holiday there each year.  The building is also used by many private groups and organisations when children are not in residence in order to raise revenue for the purpose of the charity.
If anyone would like details of how to hire Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre for residential stays, please do contact the Leeds office at info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk or telephone number 01132454281.
