    2011 Colouring Competition Winner Announced

Every year Leeds Children’s Charity stages a colouring competition for the children of Leeds who visit Silverdale to show their creative talents.   Last month the finalists of this year’s competition attended the civic hall for the awards ceremony.   Pictured left is this year’s winner, Jennifer Wilson from Armley Primary School, shown collecting her trophy from Lord Mayor, Cllr Rev Alan Taylor and Drew Haley from Northern Rail, one of the charities most supportive sponsors.  This year’s runner up was Chloe Preston.  Congratulations to all of this year’s finalists as the competition was of a particularly high standard this year!

Fantastic team work at Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre …

Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre was a hive of activity on Saturday with teams of people undertaking several tasks around the building together with a fund raising book sale to help the charity.

Michael D’Ambrosio from Halfords together with Oliver Jackson worked all day to maintain the many bicycles, go-carts and turbo-twists held at the holiday centre.  Halfords also very generously donated 4 new bikes for the children to use.  All the equipment is now ready for the many hundreds of children who will enjoy riding the bikes and go-carts during their stay at Silverdale.

A group of 25 colleagues from Aviva worked all weekend to refurbish the Heselden Room and the Shoe Room, as well as planting 1000 daffodil bulbs in the grounds of the Holiday Centre, and donating lots of other resources.  The rooms have been transformed into bright, stimulating areas where children can have fun, use their imaginations to play, and entertain their peers.

Books galore were on offer to the many visitors to the Holiday Centre on Saturday.  Susan Campbell and her family ran the book fair with all proceeds in aid of the Leeds Children’s Charity.

The trustees would like to thank everyone for all their input, help and support to the charity for which we are extremely grateful.

Charity to benefit from Book Royalties

Leeds Children’s Charity is delighted to announce that it has been chosen to receive royalties from next year’s research book, published by Cambridge University Press, focussed on topological quantum computation – a subject which combines physics, mathematics and computer science.

The author, Jiannis K. Pachos  is a Reader in the School of Physics and Astronomy  at the University of Leeds. He works on a variety of research  topics, ranging from quantum field theory to quantum optics. Dr  Pachos is also a University Research Fellow of the Royal Society.

The book is currently available for pre-order on both Amazon and Cambridge University Press before its release date in Spring 2012.

We are delighted to have been selected and would like to thank Jiannis K. Pachos for choosing such a worthwhile cause.  We wish him every success with his new publication.

London Triathlon team’s efforts fund 8 children’s holidays

We would like to offer a massive thank you to Simon Hall and Conor Lambert who recently took part in the London Triathlon.

As the pictures below highlight – it is a tough test of physical endurance which both of our brave supporters came through – both beating their personal targets and finishing the race in one piece!

What is more, the fantastic fundraising effort of Simon and Conor has raised enough money for the charity to brighten the lives of another 8 children – allowing them a break from their daily existence to experience what a holiday by the sea is like.  We thank you for your heroic efforts!

    Aviva fundraising efforts reap rewards

Many thanks to the team at Aviva who have undertaken a variety of fundraising events to raise money for the charity since naming us as their charity of the year.  To date activities have included a sponsored walk across Morecambe Bay, a Wimbledon themed food day, book sale, Easter egg drive and the ever popular “Trolley of Indulgence” – which is helping everyone gain a few pounds.

To date Aviva has managed to raise £2,800, which was gratefully received at the recent Annual Civic Day (pictured above).  Thanks to everyone at Aviva who gets involved in helping to support our worthwhile cause.
