New lawnmower delivered to Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre

The members of the Silverdale Committee have raised sufficient funds to purchase a new lawnmower from John Kaberry Limited, North Hykeham, Lincoln, to be used at the Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre, Silverdale, near Morecambe.  Our old mower has been lovingly maintained by Steven Metcalfe, our caretaker, in order to keep it going for as long as possible and it has given great service for many years.

We are extremely grateful to John Kaberry and his son, Jonathan, for personally delivering the lawnmower and for their interest in the charity and its service.

The Silverdale Committee was founded in the early 1900s to support the Leeds Children’s Charity and to raise funds to help maintain the Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre and the hundreds of children who enjoy a free residential short break/respite.  The current committee members are constantly working hard to raise funds for projects undertaken at the holiday centre including refurbishing the swimming pool, purchase of washing machines, assistance with replacement of toilets and urinals, assistance with the tarmacing of the drive and forecourt, and many more.

If you would like to help the Leeds Children’s Charity or to know more about the work of the charity, please contact info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk or telephone 01132454281.

Jimi Heselden remembered at Silverdale Holiday Centre

Jimi Heselden will be sorely missed by everyone in Leeds who benefited from his amazing generosity and philanthropy.  The Leeds Children’s Charity will be no exception.  Jimi enjoyed a holiday at Silverdale Holiday Centre, the purpose-built property owned by the charity, as a boy with his brothers and never forgot the experience.

    Silverdale Holiday Centre

Jimi has done a great deal for the charity over many years – raising awareness, generous donations, inspiring others to support this unique service to the children of Leeds, and much more.
In gratitude for Jimi’s continued support, the Leeds Children’s Charity will remember him with a named room at Silverdale Holiday Centre.  The Heselden Room is used by all the children who enjoy a holiday there and he will always be remembered as an ex-Silverdaler and generous supporter of the charity.

    Windows galore ….

The capital project to replace 126 single glazed, metal framed windows is now well underway.  With the aid of grants, local support, and the sponsorship of Bridge Aluminium Systems Limited, the trustees have now replaced over half of the windows at Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre at a cost of nearly £50k.

    Out with the old ..

    ... in with the new

This work has been undertaken to reduce energy costs and to make the building more comfortable and energy efficient for the 400 disadvantaged children who enjoy a holiday there each year.  The building is also used by many private groups and organisations when children are not in residence in order to raise revenue for the purpose of the charity.
If anyone would like details of how to hire Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre for residential stays, please do contact the Leeds office at info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk or telephone number 01132454281.

    Leeds Children’s Charity – a holiday at ‘Silverdale’ in 1923 ..

Louise Murray, aged 7 years, went to Silverdale Holiday Centre  with her sister, Lilian, who was 13 years of age, in 1923 for a holiday by the sea.  The holiday was provided by the Leeds Children’s Charity and this is her story:

“We were able to go to Silverdale as our dad, Edward Murray, had passed away aged 46 years from TB.  Our mum, Fanny, was 46 years.

We went to Cookridge Street baths, then put on Silverdale clothes (Mums were waiting for our clothes), then marched to the station, arriving at Carnforth, horse and cart took the young ones, a long trek, 2 weeks of heaven!!!!!  Lots to eat, a bed of our own, grass, trees, sands – how I wished it would last forever.”

    A holiday at Silverdale

Louise Murray is now 95 years of age and has never forgotten her trip to Silverdale.

If you are an ex-Silverdaler and have a story to tell, please do contact the charity on info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk or 01132454281.

Leeds Children’s Charity will provide over 400 holiday places at Silverdale during 2011 for disadvantaged children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to get away from difficult situations or responsibilities beyond their years.

Ex-Silverdaler returns to work as volunteer

    Seaside holidays

Kevin Denyer spent his best childhood holidays at Silverdale Holiday Centre during the years 1978 to 1982 when he was aged 9 to 13.

One outstanding memory is watching the Royal Wedding (Prince Charles and Diana) in the television room with tea and lemon curd sandwiches.

Kevin now f eels that he would like to give something back to the community and has offered his help at Silverdale Holiday Centre as a volunteer to help with children of  today who need respite.  One of the tasks that Kevin will undertake is to cook for the children but they will not  be served with jam sandwiches!

The trustees of Leeds Children’s Charity welcome help from those who have enjoyed a holiday at Silverdale in past years and to hear their stories of times spent by the sea.

To tell you story of time spent by the sea, please contact the Leeds Children’s Charity on 0113 245 4281, or email info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk.

Established in 1904  Leeds Children’s Charity is one of…

Established in 1904, Leeds Children’s Charity is one of Leeds’ oldest and longest standing charities.  We provide holidays for under privileged children aged 7-11 years at our holiday centre, Silverdale, near Morecombe Bay.

To date the charity has provided holidays for nearly 58,000 children, and currently averages sending some 400 children to the centre each year.  The lifeblood of this important service is reliant upon the support of the fantastic business and individual supporters.

We are delighted to announce that Leeds Brewery have chosen to support the Leeds Children’s Charity throughout 2011 in promotional activities.  The first event that Leeds Brewery will be helping with takes place at the Hourglass who’ll be hosting a Charity Evening during December 2011. Details to follow.

We are looking forward to some great promotional opportunities to benefit all concerned and are delighted to be associated with such a well recognised and respected local company.

If you’d like to get involved in this event, find out about other events, or would like to know how you can support us, then please call on 0113 245 4281 or email: info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk
