    Inline Helps Charity Brighten Lives

Local company Inline Healthy and Beauty have kindly donated a supply of Aloha sun lotion, ensuring the children staying at Silverdale centre will be protected throughout the summer, meaning they can play outdoors without worry of burning in the sun.

All the children the charity helps suffer from poverty, neglect, abuse, learning difficulties, illness or are young carers themselves. Leeds Children’s Charity gives these children the opportunity to have a break and enjoy a visit to the seaside, making friends and having fun along the way.

The Silverdale Holiday Centre is a purpose built resort that allows the children to enjoy a holiday they may otherwise have struggled to experience without the charity’s help. The donation is not only a very kind gesture it’s an incredibly practical donation which will help the charity protect the children’s health and wellbeing.

Inline Managing Director, Christian Cain said of the donation “The charity’s priority is the health and wellbeing of the children at the Silverdale holiday centre, and as a local charity we felt it was only right that we helped in any way possible. During the summer it can be very easy for children to get sunburnt playing outdoors, so naturally we thought sun lotion would be the ideal way to help the charity. The sun lotion is from the Aloha kids range and not only has a high SPF to screen the child’s skin from the sun’s rays, but it also has a blue dye ensuring that all exposed skin is covered!”

Leeds Children’s Charity relies on donations from the public and business such as Inline, and without these donations it would be impossible for them to continue the work they do with local children.

As the Chairman of the Board of Trustees Verlie McCann was delighted with the donation saying “The impact of the donation is incredible, Christian and Inline have given the charity enough sun lotion to last the entire summer season. The children’s wellbeing is of utmost importance and Inline’s donation means we can protect the children from the sun for the remainder of summer, letting them enjoy playing outdoors free from worry.”

Now, let’s hope the rain disappears and there is plenty more sun for the children to enjoy at the Silverdale holiday centre!

Leeds Children’s Charity has launched an appeal for people to donate toothbrushes after it revealed that over 90 per cent of children that come to stay at its Silverdale residential centre on the Lancashire coast come without a toothbrush.

The charity, which was founded in 1904, takes groups of disadvantaged and socially excluded children between the ages of seven and 11 on holiday – something that many of them would otherwise never have the chance to enjoy.

Verlie McCann, chairman and project manager of Leeds Children’s Charity, said: “Every year we give hundreds of youngsters from Leeds a holiday experience that they hopefully will never forget, but every year the vast majority of them arrive without the kind of everyday necessities that we all take for granted – and the item we notice missing the most is the toothbrush.”

While the charity does keep an emergency stockpile for just this eventuality, it does prove costly to maintain and so it is urging people in Leeds to buy an extra toothbrush next time they go shopping and either post it or drop it in to their offices on York Place, Leeds.

“In this day and age it’s hard to believe that so many young children in our region go without so much, and while the battle to improve all aspects of their lives will continue to rage, our aim is to create happy memories and enhance the small aspects as best we can.”

“And if that means every child who comes to stay at Silverdale leaves with a smile on their face and a new toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste in their bag then that’s what we will strive to do.”

To donate a toothbrush simply post it to The Toothbrush Appeal, Leeds Children’s Charity, Suite 12, 6-8 York Place, Leeds, LS1 2DS or drop it off in person.

Leeds Building Society, White Rose Rotary and Travis Perkins complete cycle path

An amazing team of volunteers from Leeds Building Society, White Rose Rotary, and Travis Perkins have joined together to create a cycle path through the woods at the Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre, Silverdale.

Nearly 500 underprivileged children will be travelling to the centre during 2013 to enjoy a week’s holiday by the sea.  The holiday centre offers them space to have fun, play, and be a child.  The spacious grounds of the holiday centre will be filled with laughter and chatter of children while they ride on bikes and go-carts, enjoy the new cycle path, playground, and take part in sports and games.

    Cycle path team - 03.02.13

The cycle path will add another dimension to this holiday experience, and we are extremely grateful to these wonderful volunteers for making this happen.

The team worked over a weekend and took the opportunity to enjoy the facilities of the holiday centre, whilst creating another facility to be enjoyed by children with little hope or expectation.

If anyone would like to help the charity, or to stay at the holiday centre for a weekend and week when children are not in residence, please contact info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk or telephone 0113 245 4281.

Thank you to all the fantastic supporters of the Leeds Children’s Charity

2012 was another successful year for the Leeds Children’s’ Charity.  Most importantly, 434 disadvantaged children enjoyed a break by the sea at the Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre, Silverdale – children who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to have a break from difficult home situations.

    Catch me if you can

    Catch me if you can

The trustees could not do their work without the wonderful support given to the charity by many amazing sponsors and benefactors.  These include Northern Rail who sponsor train tickets for the children and their escorts; Richardsons Solicitors who have raised money and also provided invaluable advice and support; Aviva Leeds who have taken the charity to their hearts and have organised a whole variety of fundraising activities, sponsored bicycle ride, runners in the Leeds 10k, cake bakes, and more; DWF LLP who have raised money through dress down days, raffles, book sales, marathon running, and collected much-needed resources; Leeds University students who have done an amazing job of organising activity weekends and weeks for the children, raised money through auctions, raffles, music nights, and a Christmas Fayre in the City; and many more extremely generous benefactors too numerous to mention – corporates of all sizes, groups and organisations, and remarkable individuals who donate money, time, and/or resources to help underprivileged children in Leeds.  2013 has already started with a bang.  Lowell Group have nominated the Leeds Children’s Charity as their Charity of the Year and have already organised a full programme of fundraising events.  Support such as this will enable the charity to provide 480 disadvantaged children with a much-needed holiday by the sea during the summer of 2013.We are enormously grateful to everyone for their ongoing support and I apologise that there is not space enough in this blog to name all our incredible benefactors.  However, sponsors and supporters are always given a mention on our website, blog, social media sites, or newsletter whenever the charity benefits from their munificence.  We feel that it is our duty to broadcast that there are extremely generous people who are supporting children in dire need.

If you would like to help the Leeds Children’s Charity in any way, please contact info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk, or telephone 01132454281.  We would be delighted to hear from you.

British Gas team up to brighten children’s lives

An amazing team of British Gas employees have helped to brighten many hundreds of children’s lives by painting the main corridor of the Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre at Silverdale, near Morecambe.

Under the Community Support programme supported by British Gas, a team of 16 enthusiastic workers transformed an area within the holiday centre to bring the ‘WOW’ factor to a much-needed short break/respite for disadvantaged children aged 7 to 11 years.

Nearly 500 underprivileged children each year will be delighted with the bright, colourful entrance that will greet them as they enter the building, and this will make their holiday start with a swing.

The trustees of the Leeds Children’s Charity are enormously grateful to this fantastic team that was led by Emma Wells, Project Delivery Manager, who said that their plan was to make a difference for children who will enjoy time and space at the Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre.

The charity also benefited from support from G4S who have donated £500 for the work of the charity.

We cannot thank British Gas enough for this wonderful support, and we know that all our small visitors over the years will enjoy looking at the bright, colourful decoration.

Quingle raises money for Leeds Children’s Charity

A fantastic fundraising event was enjoyed by many at the Metropole Hotel yesterday evening thanks to the generosity of the team at Eaves & Co.  Paul Eaves and his team were host to clients, colleagues, and trustees of the Leeds Children’s Charity at their annual Quingle.  This event is organised to raise money for charity and the Leeds Children’s Charity were the lucky recipients of the funds raised at this year’s very enjoyable event.

Challenge completed – 75-mile bike ride from Silverdale to Leeds raises £4,500

An amazing team of cyclists set off from Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre, Silverdale, early on Saturday 19 May 2012 to cycle 75 miles to Leeds in aid of the Leeds Children’s Charity.   The route took them over hills and dales, through wind and rain, until they finally sped along the Leeds-Liverpool canal towpath to their final destination where a champagne reception awaited this amazing group of individuals.

    Ready to go ..

Colleagues from Aviva and Hendersons together with family and friends made up the cycling team together with the extremely important support network that kept the cyclists safe, fed, and motivated to complete the challenge. Hours of practice put in by the team members paid off handsomely and resulted in the wonderful sponsorship sum of £4,500 in aid of the work of the charity.  The Leeds Children’s Charity provides free residential short breaks/respite for disadvantaged children aged 7 to 11 years.  Over 400 children each year travel from Leeds to Silverdale by train to enjoy time and space for fun, play, friends, and the opportunity to be a child.  The trustees are enormously grateful to everyone who took part in this gruelling challenge that will help two groups of 14 underprivileged children to have a much-needed break by the sea away from dysfunctional families and/or responsibilities beyond their years.

If you would like to help the work of the Leeds Children’s Charity in any way, please contact info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk or 01132454281.

Irwin Mitchell raises £8405 across its Charity of the Year campaign

Irwin Mitchell presented the charity with a cheque for £8,405 at their New Year party on 2 February 2012.  This money had been collected over the last year and match funded by the firm as part of its commitment to raise money for the charity in its ‘Charity of the Year’ campaign.

We would like to sincerely thank Irwin Mitchell for their fundraising efforts over the last 12 months and we are delighted an association such as this can have such a major impact on the local community.  To put Irwin Mitchell’s fundraising efforts into perspective, the money raised will cover the cost of 56 children attending Silverdale for a week’s break over 2012 – or a month’s intake of disadvantage children. 2012.  This money had been collected over the last year and match funded by the firm as part of its commitment to raise money for the charity in its ‘Charity of the Year’ campaign.
