    Inline Helps Charity Brighten Lives

    Verlie-sun-lotion

Local company Inline Healthy and Beauty have kindly donated a supply of Aloha sun lotion, ensuring the children staying at Silverdale centre will be protected throughout the summer, meaning they can play outdoors without worry of burning in the sun.

All the children the charity helps suffer from poverty, neglect, abuse, learning difficulties, illness or are young carers themselves. Leeds Children’s Charity gives these children the opportunity to have a break and enjoy a visit to the seaside, making friends and having fun along the way.

The Silverdale Holiday Centre is a purpose built resort that allows the children to enjoy a holiday they may otherwise have struggled to experience without the charity’s help. The donation is not only a very kind gesture it’s an incredibly practical donation which will help the charity protect the children’s health and wellbeing.

Inline Managing Director, Christian Cain said of the donation “The charity’s priority is the health and wellbeing of the children at the Silverdale holiday centre, and as a local charity we felt it was only right that we helped in any way possible. During the summer it can be very easy for children to get sunburnt playing outdoors, so naturally we thought sun lotion would be the ideal way to help the charity. The sun lotion is from the Aloha kids range and not only has a high SPF to screen the child’s skin from the sun’s rays, but it also has a blue dye ensuring that all exposed skin is covered!”

Leeds Children’s Charity relies on donations from the public and business such as Inline, and without these donations it would be impossible for them to continue the work they do with local children.

As the Chairman of the Board of Trustees Verlie McCann was delighted with the donation saying “The impact of the donation is incredible, Christian and Inline have given the charity enough sun lotion to last the entire summer season. The children’s wellbeing is of utmost importance and Inline’s donation means we can protect the children from the sun for the remainder of summer, letting them enjoy playing outdoors free from worry.”

Now, let’s hope the rain disappears and there is plenty more sun for the children to enjoy at the Silverdale holiday centre!

    DON’T FORGET YOUR TOOTHBRUSH!

Leeds Children’s Charity has launched an appeal for people to donate toothbrushes after it revealed that over 90 per cent of children that come to stay at its Silverdale residential centre on the Lancashire coast come without a toothbrush.

The charity, which was founded in 1904, takes groups of disadvantaged and socially excluded children between the ages of seven and 11 on holiday – something that many of them would otherwise never have the chance to enjoy.

Verlie McCann, chairman and project manager of Leeds Children’s Charity, said: “Every year we give hundreds of youngsters from Leeds a holiday experience that they hopefully will never forget, but every year the vast majority of them arrive without the kind of everyday necessities that we all take for granted – and the item we notice missing the most is the toothbrush.”

While the charity does keep an emergency stockpile for just this eventuality, it does prove costly to maintain and so it is urging people in Leeds to buy an extra toothbrush next time they go shopping and either post it or drop it in to their offices on York Place, Leeds.

“In this day and age it’s hard to believe that so many young children in our region go without so much, and while the battle to improve all aspects of their lives will continue to rage, our aim is to create happy memories and enhance the small aspects as best we can.”

“And if that means every child who comes to stay at Silverdale leaves with a smile on their face and a new toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste in their bag then that’s what we will strive to do.”

To donate a toothbrush simply post it to The Toothbrush Appeal, Leeds Children’s Charity, Suite 12, 6-8 York Place, Leeds, LS1 2DS or drop it off in person.

Elizabeth Arden event proves a real hit with the Ladies

On Thursday 2nd May, Debenhams’ restaurant on Briggate, Leeds played host to a wonderful evening of pampering and laughter in aid of Leeds Children’s Charity. Tickets were much sought after and it was a full house that enjoyed a luxury makeup demonstration from the Elizabeth Arden team at Debenhams. Danielle Wilson and her colleagues Sue and Jane also provided some excellent makeup tips from colour selection to application.

Our dedicated volunteers Karen Whitham and Charlotte Lumley were the lucky ladies who received a stylish Elizabeth Arden makeover and both looked fabulous – a real testament to the quality of these makeup products. Karen and Charlotte make up our fundraising events team at LCC and were both delighted with the results.

The event was attended by representatives from our corporate sponsors Torque EU, DWF, Hendersons, NB Translate, Lowell Group and West Yorkshire Police alongside our trustees and friends. The event raised £280 from ticket sales and donations for the charity.

Everyone in attendance was delighted to take home an exclusive goody bag and due to the events’ success and the Elizabeth Arden Ladies commitment to fundraising, it was agreed it will now become an annual event.

Many thanks to all who came and we hope to see you all at next year’s event that promises to be even bigger and better!

    Good News and Donations

The past month has seen Leeds Children’s Charity go from strength to strength after we secured some prominent corporate sponsors and received some extremely generous donations.

Here’s a brief snapshot of just some of the fantastic progress we have made in the past few weeks:

A special mention must go firstly to a very active patron of the charity, Eric Forster who has generously pledged the sum of £2000 to go towards the outdoor playing equipment. As a former chairman, Eric’s continued support has raised thousands of pounds and he has also encouraged others to donate through his connection with Leeds Rotary Club.

Simply Health, a healthcare organisation based in Leeds has pledged over £2000 which will largely go towards improving the picnic area at the centre.

Toy Trust have awarded Leeds Children’s Charity £5000 following our successful application for funding to provide respite to young carers and disadvantaged children who are supported by Signpost.

Scurrah Wainwright Trust have awarded Leeds Children’s Charity £2500 to go towards  young carers respite holiday.

Over £1000 has been delivered to the office by Catherine Noble who is organising bucket collections on behalf of the charity – keep an eye out for them in your local supermarket or shopping centre!

Whilst this money is vital to the charity we are also grateful to the many people who have donated their time, labour and resources to us. GSS Architecture has offered to brighten up the exterior of the holiday centre whilst Akzo Nobel and Dulux will be painting the boys dormitory. Simon Docherty and his staff at Premier Inn have very kindly pledged mattresses, tables, quilts and numerous other furniture and bedding for the center.

We are also looking forward to welcoming some more volunteers joining us at the centre in June and are ever grateful for people doing various challenges on our behalf. To volunteer or run the Leeds 10k to raise money for LCC please email us at info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk or get in touch via Twitter @LeedsChildrensC

    With Thanks

TalentatUni provides holidays for disadvantaged children

Talent At Uni! The live final of the biggest ever talent show to hit the City of Leeds took place on 23 February 2013 at the Stage@Leeds on the University of Leeds campus.   Singers, pianist, five-piece band, comedian, freestyle dance group, and a freestyle footballer all impressed the audience with their talent and the event was enjoyed by a packed house.  The finalists all performed really well, and it was an extremely difficult task for the judges to choose the overall winner.

Josh Davies, a solo singer and acoustic guitarist representing the University of Leeds, was the winner of the show with his amazing performance.  The audience was captivated by his obvious talent, and he was very pleased to receive his prize.

This amazing event was sponsored by Hendersons Insurance Brokers which was a massive boost to the student organisers, Nic, David and Will and they were delighted with this support.  Swink Design, Smart PR and MBIM Internet Marketing, and Doo Marketing were involved from the start, helping the students as part of their Performance Management project.  Other sponsors were Elliot Charles Group, O&H, and Allsop.

Over £1,350 was raised on behalf of the Leeds Children’s Charity from this event.  The money will be used to provide much-needed respite for 8 disadvantaged children aged 7 to 11 years who would not otherwise have the opportunity to have a break from difficult home situations.  On behalf of the organisers, Nic said, “we are glad all the money has gone to such a worthwhile cause.”

Cycles ready for action thanks to Cycle Service Leeds

Bikes, go-carts, and green machines are the absolute favourite for hundreds of children who enjoy a holiday at the Leeds Children Holiday Centre, Silverdale, each year.  A ride around open spaces and wooded cycle path is a must when you are 10 years old and do not have the opportunity to ride a bicycle at home.

    CIMG5399

Bikes of various sizes and colours have been collected by the charity, with many of them being donated by families where children have outgrown them and moved onto other things.  For those children who are unable to ride a bike, they can still join in the fun on tricycles.

It goes without saying that we must ensure that every child is safe, and we are extremely grateful to have the very generous help of Mick D’Ambrosio, Cycle Service Leeds, to maintain our collection of bikes to a high standard.  Mick has just given us the green light after inspecting and repairing the bikes for another year and we are now ready for action.

If you would like to donate a bike, sponsor a child, or help in any way, please do contact info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk or telephone 0113 245 4281.

Leeds Building Society, White Rose Rotary and Travis Perkins complete cycle path

An amazing team of volunteers from Leeds Building Society, White Rose Rotary, and Travis Perkins have joined together to create a cycle path through the woods at the Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre, Silverdale.

Nearly 500 underprivileged children will be travelling to the centre during 2013 to enjoy a week’s holiday by the sea.  The holiday centre offers them space to have fun, play, and be a child.  The spacious grounds of the holiday centre will be filled with laughter and chatter of children while they ride on bikes and go-carts, enjoy the new cycle path, playground, and take part in sports and games.

    Cycle path team - 03.02.13

The cycle path will add another dimension to this holiday experience, and we are extremely grateful to these wonderful volunteers for making this happen.

The team worked over a weekend and took the opportunity to enjoy the facilities of the holiday centre, whilst creating another facility to be enjoyed by children with little hope or expectation.

If anyone would like to help the charity, or to stay at the holiday centre for a weekend and week when children are not in residence, please contact info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk or telephone 0113 245 4281.

Support Tony’s bike ride to help children of Leeds

I have just returned from a 500k cycle ride through the heat, humidity and mosquito infested jungle terrain of Vietnam and through into Cambodia to raise funds for Leeds Children’s Charity.

It was difficult cycling in 35 degrees each day and especially humid in Vietnam but much drier in Cambodia. The local children were always pleased to see westerners cycling past – all shouted hello as we passed, and high fives; they were especially interested in tall people like me!  The children were always very happy despite having little in the way of possessions – just had the basics of clothing, food, water and shelter.     To see photos of the trip, please go to http://www.tonysbikeride.com/

Almost 2 years ago I cycled 500k across the Zambian bush to raise money to build schools for the local kids it felt so good to be able to make a difference thanks to the generosity of friends and colleagues that I felt I should do something similar, but this time for the under privileged kids of Leeds, my home city.  I am supporting the Leeds Children’s Charity who take local under privileged kids away on a week’s holiday to Silverdale near Morcambe – all the more poignant as   this is where my own grandma used to go when she was a child almost 100 years ago.

I’ve already raised over £1,500 and it would be great to get this total to £2,500 to support the vital work of the Leeds Children’s Charity.     Can you please please help this local and very worthy cause.

To support Tony, please  go to http://www.justgiving.com/Tony-Passmore1 to help raise funds for disadvantaged children of Leeds.

Onesie’s raise money for the Leeds Children’s Charity

Many activities have been organised to raise money for the Leeds Children’s Charity, but I think this must be the first for the Onesie’s.

Onesie's (2)During Christmas time, Emma Ward and her colleagues at Arla Foods organised a raffle and wore Onesie’s to raise money for the charity.  £424.38 was raised from this activity and this money will be match funded by the company.

The trustees are enormously grateful to Emma and her colleagues for their generosity.  The money raised will be used to help finance short breaks/respite for 4 disadvantaged children who would not otherwise have an opportunity to leave difficult home situations.

The charity will be providing 480 holiday places during 2013 and it would be fantastic if more supporters were to organise unusual and wacky ways in which to raise much-needed revenue to help children to have a break by the sea away from dysfunctional families or responsibilities beyond their years.

Do you have a wonderful new idea that will involve your friends and colleagues and raise funds for the charity?  We would love to hear from you and to have the chance to share the fun with others.

If you would like to help, please contact info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk, or telephone 0113 245 4281.

Thank you to all the fantastic supporters of the Leeds Children’s Charity

2012 was another successful year for the Leeds Children’s’ Charity.  Most importantly, 434 disadvantaged children enjoyed a break by the sea at the Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre, Silverdale – children who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to have a break from difficult home situations.

    Catch me if you can

    Catch me if you can

The trustees could not do their work without the wonderful support given to the charity by many amazing sponsors and benefactors.  These include Northern Rail who sponsor train tickets for the children and their escorts; Richardsons Solicitors who have raised money and also provided invaluable advice and support; Aviva Leeds who have taken the charity to their hearts and have organised a whole variety of fundraising activities, sponsored bicycle ride, runners in the Leeds 10k, cake bakes, and more; DWF LLP who have raised money through dress down days, raffles, book sales, marathon running, and collected much-needed resources; Leeds University students who have done an amazing job of organising activity weekends and weeks for the children, raised money through auctions, raffles, music nights, and a Christmas Fayre in the City; and many more extremely generous benefactors too numerous to mention – corporates of all sizes, groups and organisations, and remarkable individuals who donate money, time, and/or resources to help underprivileged children in Leeds.  2013 has already started with a bang.  Lowell Group have nominated the Leeds Children’s Charity as their Charity of the Year and have already organised a full programme of fundraising events.  Support such as this will enable the charity to provide 480 disadvantaged children with a much-needed holiday by the sea during the summer of 2013.We are enormously grateful to everyone for their ongoing support and I apologise that there is not space enough in this blog to name all our incredible benefactors.  However, sponsors and supporters are always given a mention on our website, blog, social media sites, or newsletter whenever the charity benefits from their munificence.  We feel that it is our duty to broadcast that there are extremely generous people who are supporting children in dire need.

If you would like to help the Leeds Children’s Charity in any way, please contact info@leedschildrenscharity.org.uk, or telephone 01132454281.  We would be delighted to hear from you.

    Happy New Year
