Leeds Children’s Charity – a holiday at ‘Silverdale’ in 1923 ..

Louise Murray, aged 7 years, went to Silverdale Holiday Centre  with her sister, Lilian, who was 13 years of age, in 1923 for a holiday by the sea.  The holiday was provided by the Leeds Children’s Charity and this is her story:

“We were able to go to Silverdale as our dad, Edward Murray, had passed away aged 46 years from TB.  Our mum, Fanny, was 46 years.

We went to Cookridge Street baths, then put on Silverdale clothes (Mums were waiting for our clothes), then marched to the station, arriving at Carnforth, horse and cart took the young ones, a long trek, 2 weeks of heaven!!!!!  Lots to eat, a bed of our own, grass, trees, sands – how I wished it would last forever.”

Louise Murray is now 95 years of age and has never forgotten her trip to Silverdale.

Leeds Children’s Charity will provide over 400 holiday places at Silverdale during 2011 for disadvantaged children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to get away from difficult situations or responsibilities beyond their years.
