    LEEDS CHILDREN’S CHARITY TO RUN ONE LAST SEASON AT ITS CENTRE NEAR SILVERDALE

    Leeds Children’s Charity has been taking young people from backgrounds of challenge and disadvantage to the Silverdale area for over 100 years. Since 1932 the historic centre has catered for the needs of 60,000 young people. Providing each child, a valued week long holiday.

    The charity has recently confirmed that 2016 will mark the final season of delivery at the centre and that during the year the Trustees will be looking at how best they can secure the future of the work that it delivers with young people.

    This has only been made possible by the agreement that has been reached between Michael Holgate, the owner of a caravan site opposite the holiday camp and the charity’s board. The agreement allows the centre to operate (in full) during 2016 at which point, in November, ownership will be Transferred.

    Ian Hargreaves, Chairman of Leeds Children’s Charity, comments:

    “This is not the end of the work that the charity delivers. This decision marks a pivotal moment in the life of the charity and it is one that has not been taken lightly. Silverdale is a superb holiday destination; the centre has helped us create wonderful lasting childhood memories for thousands of young people. We would like to extend our most sincere thanks to Michael for allowing us the opportunity to use the Centre for one last season. We would also like to say thank you to everyone who has supported the work of the charity. We will be holding an event at the centre this year to celebrate all that we have achieved together and to say thank you to everyone who has helped”

    Inline Helps Charity Brighten Lives

    Local company Inline Healthy and Beauty have kindly donated a supply of Aloha sun lotion, ensuring the children staying at Silverdale centre will be protected throughout the summer, meaning they can play outdoors without worry of burning in the sun.

    All the children the charity helps suffer from poverty, neglect, abuse, learning difficulties, illness or are young carers themselves. Leeds Children’s Charity gives these children the opportunity to have a break and enjoy a visit to the seaside, making friends and having fun along the way.

    The Silverdale Holiday Centre is a purpose built resort that allows the children to enjoy a holiday they may otherwise have struggled to experience without the charity’s help. The donation is not only a very kind gesture it’s an incredibly practical donation which will help the charity protect the children’s health and wellbeing.

    Inline Managing Director, Christian Cain said of the donation “The charity’s priority is the health and wellbeing of the children at the Silverdale holiday centre, and as a local charity we felt it was only right that we helped in any way possible. During the summer it can be very easy for children to get sunburnt playing outdoors, so naturally we thought sun lotion would be the ideal way to help the charity. The sun lotion is from the Aloha kids range and not only has a high SPF to screen the child’s skin from the sun’s rays, but it also has a blue dye ensuring that all exposed skin is covered!”

    Leeds Children’s Charity relies on donations from the public and business such as Inline, and without these donations it would be impossible for them to continue the work they do with local children.

    As the Chairman of the Board of Trustees Verlie McCann was delighted with the donation saying “The impact of the donation is incredible, Christian and Inline have given the charity enough sun lotion to last the entire summer season. The children’s wellbeing is of utmost importance and Inline’s donation means we can protect the children from the sun for the remainder of summer, letting them enjoy playing outdoors free from worry.”

    Now, let’s hope the rain disappears and there is plenty more sun for the children to enjoy at the Silverdale holiday centre!

    DON’T FORGET YOUR TOOTHBRUSH! 

    Leeds Children’s Charity has launched an appeal for people to donate toothbrushes after it revealed that over 90 per cent of children that come to stay at its Silverdale residential centre on the Lancashire coast come without a toothbrush.

     

    The charity, which was founded in 1904, takes groups of disadvantaged and socially excluded children between the ages of seven and 11 on holiday – something that many of them would otherwise never have the chance to enjoy.

     

    Verlie McCann, chairman and project manager of Leeds Children’s Charity, said: “Every year we give hundreds of youngsters from Leeds a holiday experience that they hopefully will never forget, but every year the vast majority of them arrive without the kind of everyday necessities that we all take for granted – and the item we notice missing the most is the toothbrush.”

     

    While the charity does keep an emergency stockpile for just this eventuality, it does prove costly to maintain and so it is urging people in Leeds to buy an extra toothbrush next time they go shopping and either post it or drop it in to their offices on York Place, Leeds.

     

    “In this day and age it’s hard to believe that so many young children in our region go without so much, and while the battle to improve all aspects of their lives will continue to rage, our aim is to create happy memories and enhance the small aspects as best we can.”

     

    “And if that means every child who comes to stay at Silverdale leaves with a smile on their face and a new toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste in their bag then that’s what we will strive to do.”

    ‘Discover Your Inner Child’ – Leeds Networking Event 

    This spring, Inspire Events and Leeds Children’s Charity invite you to an exciting and engaging networking event on Wednesday 7th of May 2014. The event aims to raise awareness of the charity through the concept ´Discover Your Inner Child’ whilst creating discussion for creativity within the business environment.

    Communication and interaction is at the heart of our event, providing regular opportunity for discussion. Throughout the session we wish to encourage learning and sharing between attendees and speakers alike within the local Leeds community. To encourage discussion and debate we have Rick Armstrong, Founder of Mentor Group and Louisa Rodriguez, Communications Expert, as our confirmed speakers to address the topic. As well as this a corporate patron of Leeds Children’s Charity, AVIVA will be speaking at the event to discuss how they made a fantastic difference to a local and worthy cause.

    LEEDS CHILDREN’S CHARITY GETS SET FOR EGG-CELLENT EASTER 

    Staff and supporters of Leeds Children’s Charity have ensured the children holidaying at its Silverdale residential centre on the Lancashire coast will have a truly memorable Easter – having collected hundreds of Easter eggs for a hunt that is sure to put a smile on everyone’s faces.

    The charity, which was founded in 1904, takes groups of disadvantaged and socially excluded children between the ages of seven and 11 on holiday – something that many of them would otherwise never have the chance to enjoy.

    Verlie McCann, chairman and project manager of Leeds Children’s Charity, said: “Every year we give hundreds of youngsters from Leeds a holiday experience that they hopefully will never forget, and whenever trips coincide with a major holiday or calendar event we aim to do something memorable to mark it”

    This year thanks to the support of Leeds law-firm, DWF, which donated over 100 Easter eggs, and a host of other businesses and individuals, Leeds Children’s Charity is laying on its biggest Easter egg hunt ever.

    “I’ve lost count of the number of eggs I’ve ferried across to Silverdale over the last couple of weeks, but I’m certain it means children on holiday at the centre will be finding them for months’ to come,” added Verlie.

    Role: To provide administrative and clerical support to the Leeds Children’s Charity, Chairman, and Board of Trustees

    Responsible to: The Chairman and Board of Trustees

    Working hours: 20 hours per week

    Salary: £8 per hour

    Location: Leeds Children’s Charity, 6-8 York Place, Leeds, LS1 2DS

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • To provide word processing and data processing service for the charity
    • To provide administrative and clerical duties to the charity, chairman, and board of trustees
    • To follow health and safety regulations at all times and to work in a safe environment for both yourself and others

    Personal Specification/Essential Requirements:

    • To have good communication skills
    • To have knowledge of Word Office, Excel, Powerpoint, and database systems
    • To be able to work positively as a member of a team and be reliable when working with young people and colleagues
    • To have patience, flexibility, and resilience with an ability to be firm as well as sympathetic towards the needs of young people
    • To have good timekeeping skills and reliability in order to respect the working hours of other team members

    Job Description:

    • To deal with incoming and outgoing correspondence
    • To attend trustee meetings and to deal with agenda, minutes and supporting documentation
    • To deal with administrative and clerical tasks
    • To deal with applications for holiday places
    • To maintain records in line with data protection in respect of applications for holiday places
    • To liaise with schools and supporting organisations in respect of applications and referrals

    To take on any other tasks as requested by the Chairman and Trustees as appropriate

    Leeds Children’s Charity Christmas Appeal 2013 

    Champion a Child this Christmas

    As we enter the festive season, it is important to reflect on our achievements and also consider those less fortunate.

    This year, we are delighted to have taken 481 children to the Silverdale holiday centre and due to increasing demand we fully expect to send the same amount next year if not more. The need for places at the holiday centre is becoming greater all the time, highlighting the fact that more and more children are living in poverty and suffering from neglect.

    This is why today we launch our Christmas Appeal to ensure we can help the children that need vital respite from challenging circumstances. Our Champion a Child scheme is the best way you can help a child in need as it will cover the cost of their holiday to Silverdale – their travel costs, food and anything else they may need during their stay. Some children come to us without even the most basic essentials but with your pledge you can have a real and positive impact on a child’s life.

    Reflections & Thanks

    It has been an incredible year for fundraising here at Leeds Children’s Charity with some amazingly dedicated people undertaking all sorts of challenges and stunts to support us. This July a brilliant team of runners took part in the Leeds 10k and raised a record breaking £15,341.62! Other people did triathlons, held bake-offs and even masquerade balls to ensure we continue to support vulnerable children in Leeds. If you would like to raise money for us, from bathing in baked beans to jumping out of a plane please get in touch>

    Next year, we hope to reach even more people. With your help, we can make 2014 brighter for hundreds of families and children.

    There are many ways to donate, either with a one-off donation or as a monthly direct debit. As its Christmas, why not give the donation as a gift to a loved one? However you wish to help us, there are plenty of options to suit you>

    The Leeds Children’s Charity Fashion Show at The Leeds Club on 16th October

    On Wednesday 16th October 2013 in association with premier department store House of Fraser, Leeds Children’s Charity is proud to present a fashion show and makeup demonstration to be held at one of Leeds city centre’s most prestigious venues The Leeds Club. Several high-end fashion brands are involved in the show including Label Lab, Biba, Linea, Pied A Terre, French Connection, Phase 8, Coast, Jaeger, Hobbs, Mint Velvet, Oasis, Warehouse, Mango, Mulberry, DKNY, Moschino, Lulu Guinness, Peter Werth, Hugo Boss and Kenneth Cole as well as Benefit, Estee Lauder and Dr Murad showcasing their beauty range.

    Elizabeth Arden event proves a real hit with the Ladies 

    On Thursday 2nd May, Debenhams’ restaurant on Briggate, Leeds played host to a wonderful evening of pampering and laughter in aid of Leeds Children’s Charity. Tickets were much sought after and it was a full house that enjoyed a luxury makeup demonstration from the Elizabeth Arden team at Debenhams. Danielle Wilson and her colleagues Sue and Jane also provided some excellent makeup tips from colour selection to application.

    Our dedicated volunteers Karen Whitham and Charlotte Lumley were the lucky ladies who received a stylish Elizabeth Arden makeover and both looked fabulous – a real testament to the quality of these makeup products. Karen and Charlotte make up our fundraising events team at LCC and were both delighted with the results.

    The event was attended by representatives from our corporate sponsors Torque EU, DWF, Hendersons, NB Translate, Lowell Group and West Yorkshire Police alongside our trustees and friends. The event raised £280 from ticket sales and donations for the charity.

    Everyone in attendance was delighted to take home an exclusive goody bag and due to the events’ success and the Elizabeth Arden Ladies commitment to fundraising, it was agreed it will now become an annual event.

    Many thanks to all who came and we hope to see you all at next year’s event that promises to be even bigger and better!
